Pallet Jack Information

A pallet jack is a piece of equipment typically found in warehouses or storage facilities. These tools are used to lift and move pallets, strong wooden planks that have bundled products stacked on top of it. Pallet jacks are the most primitive type of forklift and come in two variations: manual and powered. A manual pallet jack is used by hand and is normally used for lighter work in warehousing and retail industries. These amazing tools have been a part of the labor force since 1918 and are still widely used. Powered pallet jacks run on electricity and can move heavier and multiple pallets. Both tools are capable of easily lifting and transporting heavy, bulky and fragile items to their storage or production stations.

The jack is steered by a "tiller" like lever, which also acts as the pump handle for raising the jack. How this works is that the small handle on the tiller releases the hydraulic fluid, which then causes the forks to lower. As this happens, the front wheels inside the end of the forks are mounted on levers attached to linkages, which go to lever attached to the jack cylinder. Then, as the jack at the "tiller" end is raised, the links force the wheels down, raising the forks vertically above the front wheels, raising the load up until it clears the floor entirely. Pallet jacks only lift enough to clear the floor for following travel and often are only used for smaller tasks and organizational purposes, especially when there is no forklift truck available.

How To Use An Electric Jack

  • First course of action is to unplug the jack from the battery charger. Then remove or stow away the charger for future use.
  • Next, grasp the handles on the jack and make sure the forks are in their lowest position.
  • Then, twist the controller to move the jack forward or in reverse, depending on how the controls work.
  • Steer the jack and slide the forks underneath the desired pallet.
  • Use the controls to raise the pallet off the ground and move it to where you want.
  • Once you have successfully moved the pallet, drop the forks to their lowest position and reverse the jack out from under the pallet.
  • Once you're done, plug the jack back in to be charged. When not in use, an electric jack should always be charging.

Safety measures are critical when using an electric power jack. Ensure the safety of those operating the jack and those around in the work area by properly using the jack. Unsafe use of an electric jack can cause serious injury or damage to the products you are handling. Follow the pallet jack safety measures to ensure everyone's safety.
